Roving Librarians in the News (and in a building near you)

Thursday, March 6th, 2008 by Kitty Tynan

The Roving Librarian program was featured in a story in the March edition of Inside CUA. We’re really pleased to get the attention!

Our schedule is set for the next couple of weeks.

  • Tuesday, March 11, 10 to noon in the Pryz
  • Wednesday, March 12 from 3 to 4:30 in Pangborn lobby
  • Thursday, March 13 in O’Boyle from 2 to 4
  • Tuesday, March 18 in Millennium from 10 to 12

Because of the Easter break, we won’t be out much the week of March 17, but we’ll be back after the break.

Ask us!

Please pardon the noise

Monday, March 3rd, 2008 by Stephen Connaghan

We are building a new Juvenile Literature Reading Room on the North wing of the second floor.

New map of the second floor of Mullen indicating the Juvenile Literature Reading Room

The juvenile literature collection serves the School of Library & Information Science, which has a school library media program, and the Department of Education, which offers degrees in early childhood, elementary and secondary education.

The new reading room will include:

  • a new small group study room,
  • an office for our Reference Librarian for Library & Information Science,
  • a small lounge seating area, and, of course
  • our juvenile literature collection.

Construction will continue through mid-April. Though we have arranged for the loudest, most disruptive work (demolition) to occur during Spring Break, construction noise will still likely affect the whole North wing until the project is complete.

Coming Soon: Construction!

Thursday, February 7th, 2008 by Stephen Connaghan

Later this semester you will see construction on the second floor of Mullen Library as we convert office space into the Juvenile Literature Reading Room.

We are working with the Facilities Planning and Construction office to ensure the most disruptive work—cutting a new entrance through 18 inches of concrete—is done during Spring Break. We will post more information on how this work will affect existing study spaces as soon as we have it.

Safety First in the Library

Monday, February 4th, 2008 by Kitty Tynan

As part of CUA’s integrated security plan, here are a few safety tips from the Library:

  • Guard your personal property in the Libraries. Keep you wallet, keys, backpack, and laptop with you when you go to find a book or to use the restroom.
  • Show your CUA Cardinal Card when you enter the Libraries. You’ll also need it to borrow items.
  • Visitors, please show a photo ID and sign in at the security desk in Mullen.
  • Please present your bag to be checked as you leave the Libraries.

Thanks for your help.

There’s a Librarian in the Catalog!

Friday, February 1st, 2008 by Kitty Tynan

Having trouble finding material in the WRLC catalog? Getting help is now easier than ever! When you are in a search results page in ALADIN, look at the blue bar at the top of the screen. You’ll see a link to Ask a Librarian. Clicking will open a Meebo “widget” that allows you to choose your school and then send an instant message directly to a reference librarian. No downloads or IM account needed. It’s like having your own personal librarian in the online catalog!

If you have questions about using this new service, contact the reference desk at 202-319-5548, send an IM message or just stop by the reference desk on the main floor of Mullen.

Log in process for ILL changes Monday

Monday, January 14th, 2008 by Kitty Tynan

Effective January 14, CUA faculty, students and staff wishing to borrow materials through Interlibrary Loan will have one less step to complete. A “single sign on” is being instituted by the WRLC. What this means is that you can sign into MyALADIN once, using your last name and university ID, then move smoothly into an ILL request without having to log in again.

This change is being implemented at all of the Consortium libraries simultaneously. If you have questions, contact the Mullen Access Services department at 202-319-5060.
