Digital Scholarship Workshop: Working with Regular Expressions in OpenRefine

Ciska Wesselius

Cleaning and manipulating your dataset is an essential yet time-consuming skill. Let us save you time by introducing you to OpenRefine and particularly, regular expressions.

While OpenRefine can perform perfunctory tasks as removing unwanted punctuation marks from fields, or isolating and transferring variables in an individual field, its most salient feature is the use of regular expressions. We will show you how to construct a script from scratch and run some basic recipes for solving common problems. Once you see the power of regular expressions in OpenRefine, say “goodbye” to Excel. Please RSVP to Kevin Gunn, Coordinator of Digital Scholarship, gunn@cua.edu.
